PlayStation Portable is the favourite of millions of mobile gamers worldwide. It is one of the best handheld gaming consoles ever developed. It’s known not only for hi-fi gaming but also for its great multimedia capabilities. But it’s certainly not a mobile phone. Still you can use it for free online calling. All you need is to properly install and configure Skype on it.

Get a Skype downloaded on your PSP. You can get its installation files on the Internet for free. Go to the Skype portal and sign up for a free account, just like you do in case of Yahoo! Messenger. Once you got a Skype account you can use it to place and receive free calls over the Internet. One main thing that has to be taken care of is that you can’t use Skype on any PSP. If you have got an old PSP (the bulky one that was released before PSP Slim n Lite) you cannot use Skype on it due to memory limitations but as the PSP 2000 Slim n Lite and PSP 3000 has got double the original PSP’s RAM it can handle Skype with aplomb. Thanks to Sony for providing a built-in mic in PSP 3000. The owners of PSP 2000 have to invest a little more to enjoy Skype by getting a Sony PSP Slim & Lite Headset + Remote Control 2000.

Once you have a Skype account activate the application on your PlayStation Portable. The Skype will ask to how to connect to the network. Simply select the preferred Wi-Fi connection (don’t forget to switch on your WLAN switch). The Skype is now online on the wireless network and you can sign in with your Skype account. Wow! It’s all over. Of course it might be a good idea to get a headset, like the Sony PS3 wireless headset, so that you talk and hear more easily via the PSP. The only thing left after that is to add other Skype users and call them to enjoy a toll free talk.
